Yet we can’t go 10 minutes in the goddamn Martha Jones tag without somebody denigrating her because she had the NERVE to fall in love with a man who LITERALLY showed her the universe?

tbh, I’ve never heard any Martha hate. Up until River was a regular, Martha was even my favorite, probably because she was easier to compare to than ‘omg perfect Rose’. Then Donna came along, and was awesome, but anyway.

Maybe it’s because I don’t track the Martha tag. Or any tags for that matter. But I’ve never ONCE seen anything but

‘Martha is amazing!’ ‘Freema is GORGEOUS!’ 

Maybe I’m missing an entire section of this fandom, which is very possible. Rose fans tend to annoy me in the first place, since they won’t even accept that 10 has regenerated sometimes. But seriously? That much hate?

Why?

What did Martha ever do wrong?

All of the companions have had their share of self-sacrifice. Rose is still going through it. Martha took a year that no longer exists, traveled the world, and raised an army against the Master. Donna became part Time Lord, and had to give up everything she ever knew about the Doctor and the Universe as a payment for saving him. Amy and Rory nearly lost their daughter to their adventure, and never actually got to raise her. Jack’s stuck as an immortal, and has lost many people he loves because of it. And River went through the pain of meeting the Doctor in reverse, and is now forever stuck in a computer-created world.

None of these characters is any ‘better’ than another. They’re all different, have all had sacrifice, and all love the Doctor in their own way. None of them deserve any kind of hate. If you dislike the character, that’s your choice, but let people decide for themselves their opinions on the characters.
